This review summarizes the benefits gained by the connectivity between insulin pumps and CGM devices. It details the technical requirements and advances that have enabled this, and highlights the clinical and user benefits of such systems. Clinical trials and real-world outcomes from the use of AID systems in people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) will be the focus of this article; outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and other diabetes subtypes will also be discussed. We also detail the limitations of current technological approaches for connectivity between insulin pumps and CGM devices. Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism is primarily a journal of clinical and experimental pharmacology and therapeutics covering the interrelated areas of diabetes, obesity and metabolism. The journal prioritises high-quality original research that reports on the effects of new or existing therapies, including dietary, exercise and lifestyle (non-pharmacological) interventions, in any aspect of metabolic and endocrine disease, either in humans or animal and cellular systems. ‘Metabolism’ may relate to lipids, bone and drug metabolism, or broader aspects of endocrine dysfunction.
