ROS scavengers such as NRF2 and NADPH (PPP) exhibit cytostatic effects in normal cells. Loss of p53 and oncogenes elicits higher ROS production, leading to a cytotoxic effect. During angiogenesis, a higher ROS level sustains cell survival by affecting the NADPH, AMPK, and NRF2. In contrast, ROS generators such as hypoxia and low glucose levels lead to cell death at a minimal ROS generation. At the stage of invasion and metastasis, a higher ROS level facilitates cell survival via the downregulation of IDH1 and NADPH.
