Varenicline effective after treatment failure for smoking cessation

Abstract

Groups of patients who did not achieve abstinence from smoking after initial treatment with varenicline or nicotine replacement therapy saw improved results with subsequent strategies involving varenicline, a randomized trial has found. Nonabstainers who had received varenicline in the initial treatment phase benefited from a dosage increase in the follow-up phase.
