Abstract

Like many illnesses and injuries, sunburn may be minor and self-limiting or a more serious illness. While management is typically limited to instructions for care at home, more significant sunburn may require treatment or hospitalization for associated dehydration or extreme pain. This article reviews the following topics: Diagnosis codes for sunburn (due to sun or other UV exposure) Codes for reporting burn treatment Evaluation and management (E/M) versus burn treatment
