Abstract

In the November 2023 AAP Pediatric Coding Newsletter™, changes to the guidelines for reporting hospital inpatient or observation stays were discussed in the article, “CPT 2024: New Guidelines for Brief Hospital Stays” (https://doi.org/10.1542/pcco_book235_document004). Although taken from a long-standing Medicare policy, the new guidelines may be unfamiliar to physicians and other qualified health professionals (QHPs) who provide hospital care to children. This coding challenge offers the opportunity to confirm your understanding of the guidelines that are applicable to services provided on and after January 1, 2024.
