Among these adaptations, anautogeny, telmophagy, the large volume of blood meal, the longtime of blood meal, and the interruption of feeding are highlighted. It is emphasized that these insects are important because, in addition to bothering humans by attacking them in search of a blood meal, they are potential transmitters of diseases to animals and humans, being capable of mechanically transporting viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths, through the fact that these pathogens adhere to the structure of the proboscis. The objective of the article is to verify the medical-veterinary and economic importance of the Tabanidae family. The methodological basis of the present work consists of bibliographical research of scientific articles published in national and international academic journals classified by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES).
