NOTES ON THE OBSOLESCENCE OF USHAKOV'S DICTIONARY (IS THE DICTIONARY OF THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE, EDITED BY D.N. USHAKOV, SO OLD?)

Abstract

В статье рассматривается вопрос о том, как следует трактовать тезис об устарелости Словаря Ушакова. С одной стороны, содержательно словарь действительно во многом устарел: это касается его словника, части дефиниций, стилистических помет и других аспектов описания лексики. С другой стороны, образовательная и просвещенческая функция словаря, его подчеркнутая ориентированность на пользователя, историческая обусловленность принятых лексикографических решений современны и актуальны и по сей день. This article examines how the thesis of the obsolescence of Ushakov's Dictionary should be interpreted. On the one hand, the dictionary is indeed obsolete in many respects: this applies to its vocabulary, some definitions, stylistic markings and other aspects of lexical description. On the other hand, the educational and enlightening function of the dictionary, its stressed user-orientation and the historical conditionality of its lexicographical decisions are still up-to-date and relevant today.
