Abstract

ABSTRACTAbout 60 million Americans live in rural areas of the United States. These Americans have a lower life expectancy than their urban counterparts. There are many factors contributing to poorer health outcomes in rural America and one significant factor is limited access to healthcare. Telehealth is increasingly recognized as a solution for supporting rural access to healthcare. While many studies explore effective telehealth strategies, there are fewer studies that focus on telehealth application strategies and telehealth provider competencies specifically needed to support rural patients. This article aims to begin filling these gaps, examining best practices in rural telehealth application and provider competencies that are critical for effective rural patient care. Findings hold implications for faculty, medical professionals, and patients. Finally, the article identifies and consolidates five ideal telehealth application strategies and five telehealth provider competencies to support effective telehealth care in rural settings.KEYWORDS: Telemedicinehealthcareinequalityrural healthtechnology Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).

Accounts of Chemical Research presents short, concise and critical articles offering easy-to-read overviews of basic research and applications in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. These short reviews focus on research from the author’s own laboratory and are designed to teach the reader about a research project. In addition, Accounts of Chemical Research publishes commentaries that give an informed opinion on a current research problem. Special Issues online are devoted to a single topic of unusual activity and significance. Accounts of Chemical Research replaces the traditional article abstract with an article "Conspectus." These entries synopsize the research affording the reader a closer look at the content and significance of an article. Through this provision of a more detailed description of the article contents, the Conspectus enhances the article's discoverability by search engines and the exposure for the research.
