The application of human rights principles by clinical psychologists

Abstract

Our work is based on a desire to serve and provide services to those in need. And there is a concern for social justice. How we work professionally is guided by our professional standards which incorporate key elements of human rights principles. These principles should underpin all aspects of the work of clinical psychologists and their organisations. While it is easy to articulate them, it is their operationalisation that can be difficult. The article contains some reflections based on my experience when working in the NHS, other health services, the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the UN (Peacekeeping) and IOM (UN Migration).
