Abstract

Reactive arthritis or Reiter’s syndrome is represented by a classic triad consisting of urethritis, conjunctivitis and arthritis. It affects both sexes and occurs most commonly in young adults between 20 and 40 years of age. The disease is triggered by an infection of the urogenital or gastrointestinal tracts resulting in an autoimmune response whereby the body mistakes its own proteins for the original infectious pathogen. The arthritis is typically an acute, asymmetric oligoarthritis affecting five or fewer joints predominantly involving the lower extremities. Pain and swelling of involved joints, including sacroiliitis, may occur.
