Abstract
We focused on the regionality of crustal thickness and examined the differences in the scaling relationship between the seismic moment and rupture area for crustal earthquakes. We found good agreement between the scaling relationships and earthquake data when the saturated rupture width and stress drop was set to 16 km and 3.1 MPa, respectively, in regions with a relatively thin crust, including Japan, and set to 28 km and 2.0 MPa, respectively, in regions with a relatively thick crust. For crustal earthquakes, the accuracy of the scaling relationship is improved by considering the crustal thickness.

The Architectural Institute of Japan’s Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering aim to pursue theories for building and maintaining pieces of architecture as well as the cities or areas surrounding them, and to accumulate and systematize the knowledge needed to put those theories into practice. The Journal of Structural and Construction Engineering focuses on research results in the specific fields of “building materials and construction” and “structures.” Accordingly, it compiles articles in the following areas, disseminates relevant information, and hosts discussions: ・Concrete, steel, and inorganic materials ・Timber and organic materials ・Finishing materials ・Construction and quality management ・Applied mechanics ・Loads and reliability on structures ・Building foundations ・Timber structures ・Steel structures ・Reinforced concrete structures ・Shell and spatial structures ・Engineering seismology and structural dynamics ・Other composite structures
