Abstract

The article discusses the history of the construction of non-commercial computer networks in the Russian Federation after the removal of COCOM-restrictions, including the domestic component of the European Academic and Research Network (EARN) for educational and research organizations, as well as the TCP/IP network, FREEnet, originally associated with EARN. The main EARN nodes in Russia were domestic ES EVM computers (Russian unified system of mainframe computers) using their operating systems. Examples of some typical for the history of Russia solutions in this computer and telecommunications field are demonstrated.
