Tibetan thang kas: An overview

Abstract

Summary An overview of Tibetan thang kas is given from creation of the painted image to the origins and importance of the Tibetan scroll format. Mounting styles first presented by J. C. Huntington are reviewed and commented upon with examples taken from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. A case study detailing treatment, display, and storage solutions for a seventeenth-century central Tibetan thang ka (Amitayus Enthroned) is presented.
