Abstract
The diagnosis of the abnormal vibration of a three MW turbo altemator showed that the excessive vibration was the result of an electrical short circuit in the alternator rotor and the consequent redistribution of the rotor mass. The machine was rewound and put back into operation. The symptomatic vibration was useful in diagnosing the electrical short circuit.
