Abstract
This paper examines whether the electricity transmission network in England and Wales comply with the European Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 89/336, which dictates that electromagnetic emissions from the network must not disturb radio, telecommunications, and other equipment. A total of 11 on-site surveys were conducted and revealed that the electricity transmission system meets the essential requirements of the EMC directive and has no significant radiated emission problems to address. Although emissions were high at 50 Hz, these levels were anticipated and have been managed by the National Grid's operating procedures and policies.
