Architecture selection issues for deployable local area networks

Abstract

The authors explore unique needs and requirements of local area networks (LANs) used by deployed tactical units and assess some commercially available architectures. They consider deployability issues, LAN (local area network) components, LAN standards, and performance issues. They give general recommendations with regard to standards, fiber optics, topology and protocol, and LAN specialists. They note that no single definitive answer exists; a more definite answer would require an in-depth study of specific mission needs and requirements of the deployed units.<>
