Abstract
In English and many other languages, speakers and addressees must be referred to by pronouns. However, this is not true of Vietnamese. We propose that this difference is due to a parameterization of Tanya Reinhart’s Rule I. Our proposal requires that every root clause be analyzed as containing silent syntactic materials which encode information about the perspective of the sentence.
