World aquaculture has grown tremendously during the last sixty years from a production of less than a million tonne in the early 1950s to 90.43 million tonnes by 2012. Of this production, 66.63 million tonnes, or 73.68%, was fish. Aquaculture is now fully comparable to marine capture fisheries when measured by volume of output on global scale.
