Abstract
Power stations require a stable voltage profile to operate the power system securely. In case of any contingency voltage profile can worsen quickly and its improvement is of paramount importance. Therefore, precise calculations of reactive power adjustments required to improve voltage profile should be done. In this paper, an actual case study of 220 kV Mardan substation in Pakistan is considered, where estimations of reactive power requirement are presented. The study demonstrates the required reactive power adjustment to maintain voltages following established standards from the country’s electric power regulatory authority. The estimated calculations are presented for both normal operating conditions and contingency situations. This paper suggests grid augmentation to resolve network violations issues and presents a calculation comparison of the existing system with the anticipated system after grid augmentation.
