The species Dyschirius (Dyschiriodes) heydeni Fleischer, 1899 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) at both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar: update of its taxonomy, chorology and autoecology, with description of a new subspecies

Abstract

Summary We report the first records of Dyschirius (Dyschiriodes) heydeni Fleischer, 1899 for the Iberian Peninsula. After comparative study of North African collection material, a new subspecies is proposed for Iberian populations: Dyschirius (Dyschiriodes) heydeni transcolumnalis n. ssp. We provide (re)descriptions and diagnoses of D. heydeni and its two subspecies, an update of the distribution range of the species and discussion on its autoecology. In addition, we assessed published data on the resembling species Dyschirius (Eudyschirius) globosus Herbst, 1784 in North Africa, and concluded that they result from incorrect identifications of D. heydeni. Reasons and implications of this finding are discussed.
