Abstract

The combination of limits on reimbursement with increased competition and expenses are stimulating more health-care managers to consider installing incentive pay systems. As a solution to one set of problems, the wrong incentive system or poor timing can make the situation worse. The purpose of this article is to assist managers in deciding if incentives are appropriate and timely, and to improve the probability of success if incentives are pursued.
