Commentary: Ukrainian Domestic and U.S. Foreign Affairs— Regarding a 2021 Washington Debate and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime

Abstract

A think-tank debate in the United States that emerged in the sum-mer of 2021 illustrates challenges to Western policy toward Eastern Europe in general, and to U.S. policy toward Ukraine in particular. Stereotypes of a post-Soviet Ukraine characterized by ultra-nation-alism and authoritarianism spread by Russian propaganda resonate not only in leftist but also in other political circles. This commentary responds to two recent contributions by Ted Galen Carpenter calling for an end to U.S. support for Ukraine.
