The article substantiates the lack of existing subtypes of wear in the developed classification due to the minimum possible probability of manifestation on the elements of the mechanical part of the traction drive of locomotives. Examples of negative impact are given. A model of subtypes of mechanical wear is proposed, describing its intensity as a regularity of the change rate in wear during the operation of the part. It is indicated that mechanical wear is the predominant type.
