Communication and Teamwork

Abstract

The chapter explores why teamwork and communication is a vital component of working with children and their families. Whilst at university and in placement the undergraduate early years student will spend a lot of time working with others therefore needs to develop effective teamwork skills and have the ability to communicate clearly. A variety of theorists and researchers have developed models and approaches that can support people in developing their skills, so that they are able to work efficiently within a team environment. Some of these include Tuckman’s group formation and Forsyth’s group dynamics, Belbin’s team roles and Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence and these will be discussed in the chapter.
