Abstract

We present a new modular architecture for large multicast ATM switches. The proposed broadcast partition knockout switch (BPKS) provides a flexible network. Its interconnection network is a multistage structure constructed out of buffered crossbars (e.g., extension of knockout switches). Modularity alone with internal buffers reduces the need for stringent time synchronization. The proposed BPKS switch will provide a multicast capability, without the need for a large internal speedup, making it very suitable for VLSI implementation. We describe structure of the switch fabric and analyze the performance.
