An Inquiry into Southern Baptist and Evangelical Attitudes on Social Programs

Abstract

In 2006, journalist and former Republican strategist Kevin Phillips wrote, "Evangelicals, Southern Baptist Convention adherents and others oppose government social and economic programs because they interfere with a person’s individual responsibility for his or her salvation." My paper investigates whether Southern Baptists and Evangelicals oppose welfare programs for religious reasons.
