Abstract

The implementation of new generation of cellular systems and the exponential growth of users of wireless communication services, is followed by the increase of number of base station transmitters especially in urban areas, to provide coverage and capacity for communication. One of the parameters considered in the framework of planning and extension of cellular networks is the human exposure to electromagnetic fields and compliance of base stations emissions with international safety standards. Despite that LTE network is extended in many countries, there is very limited data regarding experimental evaluation of LTE signal levels in the vicinity of base stations. We present the results of in — situ experimental evaluation of LTE signal levels in the vicinity of base station transmitters in urban areas. The measurements are conducted in outdoor and indoor areas, as well as LOS and NLOS positions, according to proprietary protocol using the spectrum analyzer NARDA SRM 3006. To the measurement data set is applied a correction factor, to extrapolate the measured values to the maximum operating load of the system. For the measurement campaign, including more than 51 % of base stations located in the urban area under the study, the highest measured value is 135.62 dBμV/m, captured in outdoor LOS position. The results of our measurement campaign are compared with ICNIRP standards as well as with LTE signal levels obtained in other countries.
