Abstract
The safe and stable operation of GIS insulator depends on its electric field distribution, especially under impulse voltage. However, the distribution of transient electric field is usually been replaced with static electric field, which is different from actual situation. By using frequency division method, the distribution of transient electric field for ultra-high voltage GIS insulator under switching impulse voltage has been computed and the results have been compared with those obtained from conventional method. The research shows that the electric field distribution of GIS insulator from frequency division method has shown greatly difference from conventional method, especially on the interface of epoxy resin and center conductor. The percentage of electric field strength difference between them can be as high as 14.4 %.
