Abstract

Several techniques for tuning Power System Stabilizers (PSS) are available. Still, few comparative studies showing each method’s benefits and challenges are presented, generating doubt about the industry application’s best choice. In this context, this work presents a comparative study of six PSS tuning methods and the results of their application to a real power system, emphasizing benefits and difficulties from a practical point of view. A simplified PSS was used in this comparative study, and its results defined the method for the PSS tuning of Itaipu 50Hz generators for the Paraguayan-Argentinean interconnected operation. As final considerations of the work, each method’s limitations and benefits from the point of view of the facilities are synthesized, and the results of PSS tuning are presented, making the produced results useful for other companies.
