Abstract

The increase in human activity in the Arctic region has led to a rise in the need for improved management, monitoring and surveillance of the region. The weather conditions may change quickly and dangerously, while the presence of sea ice poses an increased risk to ships and platforms. For these reasons, the need for frequently updated information (ice edge, icebergs, and ice floes, wind and wave conditions) has increased. This paper presents the role satellite images can play in supporting human activity in the Arctic.
