Abstract

John Welsted may be identified from a volume known as the ‘Burgus Book’, containing manuscript accounts compiled by the Stewards of the Caine Guild in a virtually unbroken sequence from 1561 to 1841. John Wclsted and his brother Isaac are revealed as joint makers of the town chest in the account for 1578/9, which records payments “ ...to John Welsrcd for the chest, i4S4d...” and “ ...to Isaac Welsted...for the chest, and for hewing the stock for the same, 6snd...” The chest is in the collection of St. Mary's Church, Caine, Wiltshire.
