Dilemmas facing mature island destinations: cases from the Baltic.

Abstract

This article investigates some of the issues facing mature tourist destinations. It outlines research carried out into the problems facing three island destinations in the Baltic: Bornholm, an island belonging to Denmark; Gotland, belonging to Sweden; and the Aland Islands which are an autonomous province of Finland. It pinpoints the need for mature destinations to take a more co-ordinated and professional approach to the tourism industry founded on improved market research, training and marketing. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
