Abstract

While this strategy gives the book thematic focus, readers interested in a 'pluralist' account of the 'realities of work' may be only partly satisfied. The binary opposition between disadvantaged 'workers' and inherently exploitative 'capitalist managers' ignores the experiences of many who fall in between and tends to universalise the motivations of the latter group. Also, readers unaware of examples of work 'rationalities' based on different gender or ethnic worldviews, for example, might read a sense of inevitability into the strongly dialectical account. It would be a shame if this inhibited experimentation with alternatives.
