Abstract
This paper describes the design, implementation, and analysis of a proof-of-concept prototype of a traffic surveillance system. The system employs an in-vehicle device for collecting real-time traffic data. The device uses GPS technology to record information about the position and the speed of a moving vehicle. The device uses the emerging ZigBee standard as a low-cost low-power wireless ad-hoc network, to enable the device to be a member of a ZigBee network and allow the data to be transmitted to one of the roadside base stations, which relay the data to a central server. The gathered data from all vehicles are fused and maintained on the central server. Real-time information on the server is presented to end-users through a web interface. In addition, the server maintains historical Doha traffic information database that can be used for traffic analysis and prediction.
