Adaptation of self organizing network for ASL recognition

Abstract

Modified labeling process for Kohonen’s Self Organizing Network was developed to explore the expandability of American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary recognition. The labeling process was developed for handshape recognition and then applied to recognize ASL words. The advantage of this method is that the network does not have to be retrained to increase the learned set only re labeled thus making the \earning more adaptable.
