This Shaoshan tang edition contains some “eyebrow” notes and a few notes next to the text. This edition is not only the earliest extant commentated edition of the Xixiang ji but also “the earliest extant commentated edition of Chinese dramatic texts; therefore, it is very significant in the circulation of the Xixiang ji and even in the history of classical Chinese drama. The Shaoshan tang edition is most likely the “first cut and first print” edition and the “first commentated” version, which contains the urtext and commentaries on which the extant Ming versions were based.
