Abstract

This paper proposes a novel method for optimization of Phasor Measurement unit (PMU) placements. The method aims to reduce the number of PMUs on generators and still well represent the transient stability of power system. There are two steps in this scheme: firstly, the generators are divided into some groups depending on their performance in steady and transient state. Secondly, the representative generators are selected in each groups based on proposed selection criterion, where PMUs should be installed. The validity of the proposed method is verified in the IEEE 39 bus standard power system.
