Abstract
In this chapter the essential aspects of anesthesia for pheochromocytoma resection are discussed. Specifically, multisystemic syndromes associated with this disease, preoperative optimization, and intraoperative therapy are reviewed. Additionally, the use of specialized monitoring and drug therapy are considered. The chapter is divided into preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative sections with important subtopics related to the main topic in each section. Issues addressed that are related to preoperative evaluation include medical clearance, diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, avoiding hypertensive crisis, and treating hypotension. Intraoperative topics concern monitoring and induction of the patient, and treating both hyper- and hypotension as either arises. Postoperative issues discussed include assessment and treatment of delirium and hypotension.
