British Jurassic Regular Echinoids Part 1, Introduction, Cidaroida, Echinothurioida, Aspidodiadematoida and Pedinoida

Abstract

ABSTRACT Part one commences the description of the regular echinoids of the British Jurassic. The history of their scientific description from pre-Linnean times to the present day is reviewed and a stratigraphical framework established for the monograph. Members of the orders Cidaroida, Echinothurioida, Aspidodiadematoida and Pedinoida are covered, with 21 genera and 40 species described in detail and a further 14 species left in open nomenclature. The genus Pseudopedina is transferred to the Family Pelanodiadematidae and Order Echinothurioida. One new family, Paracidaridae, is erected to accommodate the genera Paracidaris and Caenocidaris.
