Abstract

This paper describes a neural network system developed to adaptively control surface signals to maximize traffic flow. Utilizing a neural network optimization model, the system was created with special emphasis placed upon traffic management during special events in preparation for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Results are presented demonstrating the system's ability to manage traffic associated with stadium sporting events.
