Abstract
This paper provides a new method to characterize power absorption mechanisms in reactive field regions. According to the proposed approach, the energy dissipated in any lossy scatterer exposed to any radiating source is described in terms of power transfer from a set of equivalent generators to a microwave junction. By introducing the concepts of available power and load factor in electromagnetic fields, this general and analytical model allows a better understanding of near-field energy deposition phenomena and identification of the most impacting parameters. In order to illustrate the relevance of this technique, the equivalent junction model is applied to the full analysis of power absorption in a lossy cylinder close to a current line source.
