Abstract

Future telecommunication services inevitably will lead to a varying mixture of broadcasting and interactive services with a wide diversity of bitrate, upand downlink traffic ratio and latency requirements. Therefore, various transport techniques, ATM, LAN traffic and Internet access have to be integrated in a common system architecture. To be economically successful all local loop systems have to support such a flexibility. A smooth service deployment with evolution is mandatory, e.g. starting with digital video broadcasting, then moving gradually towards fully interactive broadband ATM solutions, but not forgetting the medium bandwidth applications needing 2 Mbitls per service and per user.
