Dmitry Tikhobrazov: “My Immediate Goal Was to Get out of Serving Ukrainian Separatism”. Reminiscences about the Events in Ukraine in Late 1918 – Early 1919

Abstract

This article introduces previously unpublished memoirs of Colonel Dmitry Nikolaevich Tikhobrazov about the events in Ukraine between late 1918 and early 1919. These memoirs are stored at the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian and East European History and Culture at Columbia University in New York. The published fragment describes the attempted conscription of the memoirist to serve in the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Directory and the refusal of this service. These memoirs give us an insight into the attitude of white-oriented offi cers to the Petliurists and into what orders were issued to the Ukrainian troops, including in matters of discipline. The memoirs contain everyday sketches of Ukrainian life during the German occupation.
