Abstract
Professor Hugo de Vries, who died on May 21, 1935, at the age of eighty-seven, belonged essentially to the intellectual aristocracy. The son of a former Prime Minister of Holland, he followed the usual course of study at one German university after another, most influenced perhaps by Sachs at Wurzburg, and was so early marked out for distinction that he became Professor of Botany at Amsterdam at the age of 30, to which university he remained faithful until his retirement forty years later.
