Abstract
The testing program developed for the first bridge in Norway utilizing pumping for placement of lightweight concrete is presented in this paper. The results from parallel testing of both normal weight and lightweight concrete performed during the bridge construction are reported. A discussion of the economics of using high performance lightweight concrete on the Rugsund bridge is also presented. Also described is the Sundoy Bridge, the second bridge in Norway using the same technique. The results of these two projects clearly confirm that high strength lightweight concrete is both economical and efficient as construction material for long span bridges. While the cost of the lightweigh concrete may be more per cubic yard than normal weight concrete, the total cost of the structure may be less as a result of reduced dead weight and lower foundation costs.
