Abstract

The main advantage of cloud computing consists in minimizing the cost of computing services, but on the other hand energy consumption in cloud data centers is increasing in an unacceptable manner. Thus, there is a need to improve the energy efficiency. Energy consumption could be reduced with different strategies. One of them consists in optimizing the virtual machines placement in the physical hosts. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the studies that consider reducing the energy consumption through the optimization of the placement process of virtual machines in cloud data centers. The most popular algorithms are presented and a specific attention is given to multi-objective and network-aware studies.
