Abstract

Automated driving opens up many advantages for the driver. Until fully automated driving, though, the driver is still not completely detached from the actual driving task. Situations in which the driver has to intervene and take over control will be inevitable. These takeover situations are currently well researched. However, there is only limited information about what happens on the cognitive level during the transition from automated to manual driving. Thus, aim is to unravel the cognitive processes during the entire take-over. A cognitive psychological approach is used in order to propose a conceptual framework that may serve as basis for a cognitive model. Such a model allows dynamic predictions and paves the way toward an adaptive user-centered HMI for the take-over situation.
