Abstract
SUSANNA BALAYAN - CHRONOLOGICAL LAYERS OF SPORTS
TERMINOLOGY
The article discusses the chronological layers of sports terminology in
Armenian. Sports terms that refer to both general and Grabar, dialectal,
Western Armenian, as well as new and borrowed words have been studied.
Those chronological layers are introduced in different proportions, where the
prevailing part are general sport terms, that are used in all stages of the
development of the Armenian language. The rest of the chronological layers
consist of the newly formed sports terms, loanwords, the number of which is
growing due to the emergence of new sports. The study of the chronological
layers of sports terms can be used to trace the development of terminology
on the one hand, and to clarify the sports terminology, on the other.
