Abstract

An important new trend in Ottoman studies focuses on the historical demography of the Ottoman Empire. A number of scholars have attempt­ ed in recent years to reconstruct the evolution of the population in various parts and provinces of the Empire. The great interest of these studies consists in the new documentation they bring to light from the non-generally accessible Ottoman archives'.
