Abstract

Communication between devices is the foundation for pervasive computing. Generally, only devices running on the same middleware platform can communicate with each other. This problem is tackled by interoperability solutions for pervasive computing systems. However, proposed solutions neglect interoperability for event notifications, so far. Thus, in this work, we propose an interoperable notification service enabling cross-platform notifications. Our approach translates between notification scope types and integrates also platforms that do not offer notifications. The proof of concept implementation shows that using our notification service, different middleware platforms with and without support for notifications can notify and subscribe to each other.
